From Publisher's Weekly:

"Writing with business journalist Murphy, entrepreneurship expert and UC-Berkeley professor Burgstone offers a strong, comprehensive handbook for aspiring entrepreneurs who are seized with the fire of ambition but unsure where to begin. The authors detail a step-by step framework for readers to brainstorm a winning business idea, test it before they've committed too much time and money, and develop it into something great. Using examples of companies large and small (Zipcar, Parenting, Wal-Mart, Google), Burgstone and Murphy teach readers to find and fill an unmet customer need, plan for profitability, strive for sustainability, establish credibility, gather necessary resources, lead and manage effectively, and maintain balance. Their enthusiasm and energy make even complex questions about idea generation, customer acquisition, and leadership accessible; and the practical, easy to understand instruction will be invaluable to the budding entrepreneur."

Must Read for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

 January 12, 2012
By asub90

As a current student and aspiring entrepreneur I have read countless books on entrepreneurship/start-ups and I can confidently say that Breakthrough Entrepreneurship stands above the rest. Similar books approach entrepreneurship by offering either a very generic how-to-guide or simply a catalogue of inspirational anecdotes. BE offers a potent blend of both, and more.

BE breaks down the entrepreneurial process into distinct, critical steps: seeking opportunity, forming a team, raising capital, creating a product/service, monetization, and on. At each step, the authors provide a two-sided deep dive. At one end they describe the importance and implementation of each step, and at the other, they offer pertinent case studies that exemplify the process. With this simple yet powerful, methodical approach to teaching entrepreneurship, BE offers concrete guidance on how to start a company as well as some perspective on how the most successful entrepreneurs have done it.

Ultimately this book is fantastic because it serves dual purposes. You can read it as a novel, inspiring and motivating you to start a venture. But more importantly, you can also utilize BE as a textbook, guiding you at each step of your own entrepreneurial journey.

This book is a very fast read. The advice offered in the books is well supported by interesting examples. The book starts with a framework for evaluating business ideas and ends with general advice about leadership styles and the mentality of a successful entrepreneur. By following the systematic approach outlined in this book new entrepreneurs can gain confidence in their ideas and avoid wasting time with bad ones.

Greak book. Of course anything from anyone at Harvard Business School knows their stuff, but the book was a great price and order came on time as promised. I take that back… I think it arrived a day ahead of schedule! This book is a must for any entrepreneurs who have never done this before, and since the Kaufman foundation says over 80 percent fail in their first year, you need this to keep you on track and make your project successful. Thanks

A Good Starting Place for A Budding Entrepreneur

Breakthrough Entrepreneurship is a great book for anyone who has a good idea and wants to turn it into a business AND those who have not come up with an idea, but want to explore entrepreneurship. Breakthrough Entrepreneurship allows readers to learn how to think like an entrepreneur through the guidance of the authors and through case studies of both popular and lesser-known (but still successful) startups and their founders.

The book guides you through the process of coming up with new ideas, how to assess those ideas (in terms of whether or not the ideas are worth pursuing and a way of assessing the value of the ideas) and how to pursue those ideas including all the important considerations that may not be obvious to a first time entrepreneur.

This book is a good compliment to The Lean Startup and is a quick read making it a must read for those who haven’t taken the jump into the uncharted waters of entrepreneurship and want a tool box of useful ways to identify opportunities and build businesses starting with little resources in the beginning.

Most Comprehensive Entrepreneurship Book Out There!

Breakthrough Entrepreneurship is a MUST READ for anyone interested in pursuing a life in business. As an aspiring entrepreneur, I found the writing, stories, and layout of the book to be superb. The way in which a business principle/tenant was described and then exemplified by a real world story was very comprehensive. This book makes other books in the entrepreneurship category seem irrelevant. Very exciting stuff. Terrific read!

A great book on entrepreneurship. Highly recommended.

This was the first book I read on entrepreneurship. The greatest strengths of the book are its clarity, structure, and encouraging nature.

Entrepreneurship can be a daunting idea to people who have never thought about owning their own business, but Burgstone makes it easy to digest and comprehend.

He structures each chapter on an important concept in entrepreneurship (e.g. customer pain). He also presents the important concepts in early chapters so that they stick with you even after you’ve finished the book.

Last but not least, this book is encouraging. It gives you confidence as you try to start your own business. At the end of the day, knowledge is about removing uncertainty and fostering confidence. Burgstone does a great job with regard to encouraging to-be entrepreneurs.

If you are interested in pursuing entrepreneurship, I highly recommend this book and also some of Blake Master’s notes on Peter Thiel’s startup class taught at Stanford.

A Great Overview

An excellent first-read for entrepreneurs just starting out or for experienced entrepreneurs looking to reorganize their startup process. It’s a high-level overview of how to think through your business concept and execute, without being overly prescriptive. If you’re the kind of person that needs detailed templates for planning, you may require additional resources. Overall definitely a worthwhile read.

I wish I wrote this book!!!

Reading BREAKTHROUGH ENTREPRENEURSHIP was such a wonderful read. Burgstone and Murphy write the book with such guidance and mentorship through their words. The text was witty, fun, positive, honest and logical. Being able to connect and snowball the ides from one chapter to the next allowed me to build on and grow.

Every time I sat down to read a module, I would scroll through my brain, remembering the ideas I’ve had in the past. I’d compare the ideas with the points they discuss in the book. It’s amazing how much I realized I wasn’t thinking about. My perspective on building ideas has gotten so concrete. I can weed out the ideas that seem good, from the ideas that ARE good. It is helping me know when and what to invest my time in and not waste money.

I have recommended this book to so many people, and those people have recommended it to so many other people. I wish I wrote this book!!!

Your Bible for Entrepreneurship

“Breakthrough Entrepreneurship” was a fantastic read and was taught to me from Jon Burgstone himself at an Entrepreneurship course in UC Berkeley! From a student’s perspective, this book helped me develop business acumen and brought up crucial topics worth thinking about. “Breakthrough Entrepreneurship” highlights possible pitfalls and predicaments that many beginning entrepreneurs succumb to and details how to avoid them. The book was well-written, and more importantly, easy to grasp and understand. Reading this book will ultimately set you on the right path to entrepreneurship and give you the proper tools to get started. This is your Bible for starting your own company and pursuing your dream!– No matter what stage you are in your life, this is a MUST READ for any aspiring successful entrepreneur!
