Before You Start Your Career in Human Resources!

March 15, 2008 | Author: admin | Filed under: Careers, General Business

Many folks are people-people and they prefer a job working with people, a career in human resources might be just up their alley, but I warn you if you are such an individual; well, it’s not as easy as it looks. Before you jump into such a field or pursue such a career, you need to be sure that you are up for it.

It pays to know the basics before taking any position that deals with employees in any corporation, whether you are the company’s official Human Resource Director or a business unit level executive.

“Employment Law Answer Book”

by Mark R. Fillipp, Thomas L. Boyer and James O. Castagnera, 1998.

Although this fourth edition was written after such laws as affirmative action, it is a relatively small volume at 700 pages with small font. This book is not the be all end all of employment law, far from it say the authors, rather the work is portrayed as a useful informational tool, with practical knowledge for those dealing with employees in the corporate environment.

Now then, I certainly do not want to deter you from a rewarding career in human resources, but it is a highly regulated field and there are so many laws that often it seems like there is no humanity left, just a sterile world and a job. No, it is not always like that, but it certainly can be. Employment lawsuits are a huge issue for small, medium and large businesses.

In fact, the most important job now a days for a human resource director is to head off potential lawsuits in advance and that means from the second a person is hired until they leave the company.
