Seven Steps to Infuse Focus for Stronger Results

March 7, 2008 | Author: admin | Filed under: Careers, General Business

Distraction wreaks havoc on results. Stay focused on success and you will experience greater results.

Success strategy #1: Before you pick up the phone, get clear on your outcome. What would be a great result? Remind yourself of an excellent call where you absolutely succeeded. Put your mind on that right before you make the call.

Success strategy #2: If you have become rote or automated in your approach, brainstorm six or seven new words you could use in the opening of your call. If you are scripted, see if you can infuse a different tone of voice or a welcoming hello to change the pattern. Variation will give your brain creative connections that are going to hook the caller more so than a clearly automated approach. Perhaps you can script out six or seven different approaches and then choose an approach before you make the call, and be prepared to shift into a different approach if the caller responds in ways that lead you to believe a different approach would succeed.

Success strategy #3: Get clear on your energy level. Measure it. How are you feeling? When your energy is high, this is going to be experienced by everyone you reach. Get into high energy and stay focused on your purpose.

Here is an example of something you can say to yourself before you make the call that will up that energy “I have that feeling something really great is going to happen today. I am not sure what it is, I just have that feeling.” Even saying that moves your brain into the sense of anticipation. When you are anticipating something amazing — your whole way shifts into the positive. And everyone loves to be on the other side of that communication. Even if you have no idea what great thing might happen, mention that in the call and people are drawn and attracted to you. Successful calls will increase your focus, because positive feedback breeds more results. The more people respond well to you, the more you want to make the calls. Set into motion good results, and these results beget more good results.

Success strategy #4: Remember, fear repels. Fear is smelly. When you are afraid you are going to fail, everyone feels it and instinctively is repelled by your words and your communications. Are you feeling fear? Are you nervous or scared when you are making the call? This is something to work through because inadvertently feeling afraid before you communicate with potential clients, they are going to be repelled by you. Move out of fear and into anticipation of something good. It is a mental discipline to do this and everyone can do this. You can choose what you are thinking and feeling at any given moment. When you stay in fear, you can lose deals and this doesn’t do much for your focus or your results.

Success strategy #5: Take breaks to inspire. Design breaks from your calls that put you back into clarity of the excellent results you wish to achieve. Most people take a break and think about everything that went wrong. Focus on what is right. Any small positive wins. Or pick up an inspiring book and read a passage between calls. Seriously get focused on something that lifts you up so you are ready to win with the next call. This mindset will streamline your results upward. It sounds so basic, but inspire yourself right before your next set of communications.

Success strategy #6: Who are you being when you answer the phone? People focus a lot on making the sales calls and forget that answering the follow-up questions is critical to increasing results. If you are in a negative mindset, don’t take the call. Wait until you are inspired and then answer. Or pause when the phone rings and answer the phone with focus, energy and intention.

Success strategy #7: When you experience communication with someone who brings your energy down, recognize this and let it go before making the next call. This is critical to increasing your overall results. Learn what you can about any one conversation. And it is not always about you. It might be about you, but it might also be a bad day for the other person. So when someone brings you down, don’t give them the “power” to change your chemistry for the rest of the day. Let it go. I tell my clients “be a duck” and let things roll off. Stay in tune with your power, your focus, your own abilities. When you allow another person’s energy to infect you beyond five or 10 minutes, you are giving someone else your own power. Your results belong to you. Stay focused, it works.
